Lei Xu
Deputy leader

Lei Xu is a Senior Lecturer in Electrical Engineering at the Department of Engineering in the School of Science & Technology. His research interests are focused on investigating light-matter interactions with optical resonant metastructures and metasurfaces for different applications, including linear and nonlinear metaoptics, optoelectronics meta-devices, metastructure-based photodetectors, and bio-photonics.

Cuifeng Ying
Project Manager and Safety Officer
Dr. Cuifeng Ying received her Ph.D. in Physics in the research group of Prof. Jian-Guo Tian in 2013 from Nankai University, where she used photonic crystals and plasmonic nanocavities to enhance fluorescent signals for biosensing applications. She followed up her doctoral studies during a first postdoctoral appointment with Prof. Yongsheng Chen in Nankai University's Centre for Nanoscale Science and Technology, where she began performing single-molecule sensing using nanopores. In 2016, she joined the Biophysics group of Prof. Michael Mayer as a postdoctoral researcher at the Adolphe Merkle Institute at the University of Fribourg. Her research focused on characterizing single proteins using nanoplasmonic optical measurements and nanopore technology.

Arman Yousefi
PhD Candidate
I am Arman Yousefi, and I am currently a PhD student at Nottingham Trent University, advanced optics and photonics group(AOP). Prior to pursuing my doctorate, I completed my Master's in materials science and engineering. For several years, I had the opportunity to work as a scanning electron microscopy operator, gaining valuable experience in the field.
I am currently a part of the AOP Group, where my research focuses on nanostructures and their fabrication. Specifically, I am intrigued by the application of plasmonic nanotweezers for the trapping of single molecules and studying their behavior. In my PhD studies, I explore the possibilities of using techniques such as Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and e-beam lithography for the fabrication of these nanostructures.

Ze Zheng
PhD Candidate
Ze Zheng is a PhD student in Nottingham Trent University. He obtained his bachelor's degree in Physics from Nankai University, China in 2021. Ze's research interests primarily revolve around nonlinear metasurfaces and their practical applications, including nonlinear imaging, quantum entanglement generation, and nonlinear sensing. He is particularly enthusiastic about combining nonlinear metasurfaces with advanced concepts and techniques such as bound states in the continuum, phase-change materials, and chiral metasurfaces.

Gabriel Sanderson
PhD Candidate
Gabriel Sanderson has a background in Biomedical Engineering and is currently working towards a PhD applying optics and photonics for the study of biological processes. His research interests include metasurfaces, medical imaging, and biosensing using nanoscale structures. A passion for practical science means you will likely find him in the lab performing optical experiments to explore the exotic properties of metasurfaces designed and produced by the AOP team. He aspires to contribute to the growing field of static and reconfigurable metasurfaces and looks to link this optical frontier to biotechnology.
